Feb Half Term Ideas…

Posted by Danielle

Half Term is fast approaching and its time to start looking at how you can keep the kids entertained. February Half Term is probably one of the hardest as most of the popular theme parks are closed for the winter but fear not here are my top 5 ways to keep the children entertained this half term.

1. Dr Who at the O2

Step through a crack in time and join the Doctor on an adventure of a lifetime. Fend off Daleks and reunite the Doctor with the TARDIS while meeting some of the best-loved and scariest monsters from the show. Featuring a breathtaking 3-D finale and special scenes filmed with current Doctor Matt Smith this is a must for a fan of Dr Who of any age.

2. Alton Towers Feb Half Term

Although the full theme park isn’t open there is still a great selection of rides that are operating over the February Half Term. Air, Blade, Nemesis, Heave Ho, Marauder’s Mayhem and Sharkbait Reef by Sea Life plus many more family favourites will operate for this special Half Term opening.

3. The Lion King

The Lion King is still one of the most popular children’s films of all time and the Lion King Musical is one of the best loved West End classics. There has never been a better time to visit a musical as there are so many great family shows available. Hotels in London also offer some great family rates so why not combine it with a show and make a real trip out of it.

4. Tutankhamun – His Tomb & His Treasure

Manchester has welcomed the wonders of the Tutankhamun exhibition which showcases over 1,000 objects and brings a real piece of history to life. If you haven’t already been to see this fantastic exhibition you are really missing out.

5. Diggerland

Diggerland is a unique attraction that kids LOVE and it’s easy to see why. Diggerland features over 18 different rides, drives and attractions using full sized construction machinery. With adults and kids both having access to the machines it’s a fun day out for the whole family.

What are your top tips for keeping the kids entertained this half term?

The Vikings are coming….

Posted by Becky

This half term the Vikings are descending on York. From the 19th to 27th February the historic city steps back in time as the Vikings take over in the 26th Annual Jorvik Viking festival. Every year thousands of visitors flock to York to see the festivities. With battle re-enactments, demonstrations and the opportunity to have a go at sword fighting and archery the festival is a huge hit with both residents and visitors alike.

Steeped in history the city welcomes hundreds of Vikings, academics and historic authors into the helm. With schools broken up there are plenty of activities to keep the kids entertained. Horrible Histories author Terry Deary will be do a reading as will Matt Haig author of Shadow Forest and Runaway Troll. Don’t worry there is plenty for the adults too with special screenings of Monty Pythons Holy Grail, Viking Food & Drink and a spectacular boat burning.

It’s not just York who celebrates the Vikings though. With Festivals to welcome spring throughout January, February and March Shetland continues the Viking tradition with a range of Up Helly Aa events. While over in Sweden the 48-mile Viking Run stretches along the ice of Mälaren from Uppsala to Stockholm.

Across Scandinavia there are plenty of Viking festivals taking place. In Demark Ribe’s famous Viking Centre stages a reconstruction of a traditional market in May while summer sees a Viking fair at Moesgaard Beach. Celebrating their heritage Vikings from all corners of the earth gather at Iceland’s Viking Village for their annual Viking festival.

So will you be going to any Viking festivals? Have you visited Viking sites and what did you make of it? Which are the best and the most authentic – let us know.

Disney’s 50th Appearance

Posted by Becky

There is something satisfying about sitting and watching a Disney film, with nibbles around you and a darkened room you can easily sink off into another world. Disney’s new film Tangled had its premier in London on the 23rd January, screened at the prestigious Mayfair hotel the event saw a host of celebrities descend into an escapist world of princesses and adventure. Based on the traditional German fairytale Rapunzel Tangled goes on general release in the UK this Friday and is sure to be a huge hit with kids and grownups alike.

I’m sure I’ll be taking my niece to see it, as I did with Bolt, The Princess and the Frog and Toy Story 3 and with half term around the corner it’s the perfect way to entertain the children. If Tangled isn’t for you or your kids Touchstone Pictures Gnomeo & Juliet receives its UK premiere on 30th January at London’s famed Leicester Square. Directed by Shrek 2’s Kelly Asbury the film is based on the original Shakespeare play Romeo & Juliet, with a star studded cast and music by Elton John it ticks all the boxes for a sure fire hit. While the premier is just next week the film does not go on general release until February.  Also popping up in February, though I’m not convinced on this one, is the live-action film of Yogi the Bear, with Dan Aykroyd as Yogi and Justin Timberlake as Boo-boo there’s something for all the family.

With sequels planned for Cars, Kung Fu Panda and Happy Feet this year the animated film is a firm fixture in the film world.

What’s your favourite animated film? Do you prefer the old Disney classics like Snow White and Robin Hood or are you a fan of the Pixar and DreamWorks creations.
